We moderators are here to make sure the boards run as efficiently as possible -- we volunteered to do it, so it's absolutely no bother to be notified when there is spam or other problems. TechTalk, though, is not where spam problems need to be reported, so please contact the moderators by using the report feature, or through direct email. The report icon provides a link that goes directly to the post in question, so the moderators don't have to waste time searching for what's being reported...

Reported 4 porn spams on Survivor thread--they just keep on coming. One from United Kingdom.

      • Please understand that we are doing what we can -- as quickly as we can -- to deal with the spam. However, we are all volunteers for the site who also have other personal obligations, especially at this time of year, so we cannot be on 24/7. We're all juggling the moderation of multiple boards, and some of the miscellaneous boards do not have specifically-assigned moderators.

On reporting: Using the report icon is the best way to report spam. The reason is two-fold. Reported spam on orphaned boards (those without assigned moderators, such as reality shows, etc.) notifies all site moderators -- everyone, not just a few -- so the chances for a quick response is greater. The second reason is that the private moderator section of this site has a location where reports are stored, so it provides us with a back-up source for checking problems, in the event of technical problems. If you don't use the report icon, not everyone is notified and your reported post isn't stored for all moderators to access.

If you use the report icon on an active soap board, the report is sent to those assigned board moderators only, such as lizincinti, shellyinphx, Kristina, and me on the GH board. No one else receives those reports, but they are still stored in the moderator section of the site.

If you report spam through email to only one moderator, chances are greatly diminished that the response will be quick. That moderator may be in the middle of a medical appointment, cooking dinner, running errands, or dealing with a tempermental computer!

Even under the very best of circumstances, none of the moderators can be in all places all at once, so please do be patient as we try to address the spam issue as quickly as possible.

If you notice that a spammer has made numerous posts, it is not necessary to report each individual post by that spammer, because the moderators automatically ban the spammer and remove all posts associated with the account.
Do we really have to enter the threads and report each one.

          • Many of these spam posts exist inside normal discussion threads, so they're already open and visible. All you need to do is click onto the black triangular icon to report it. Accessing the spam post or spam thread won't put you at any risk, but I would definitely advise that you NOT click onto any link that's contained within the spam!

That is a valid fear. I reported with the black triangle on the Chinese multiple username posts and got "piggybacked" and knocked off the board. Expensive fix.

I've reported dozens of these current spam posts and never had a problem. So unless you inadvertently click on a link in the post, it should be safe to report.

                  • The spammers seem to know which are the most popular shows with the most viewers, and go there. Amazing--Russians, Chinese, and United Kingdom, I've seen! They have to have that keyboard, as well.

                    • This is getting seriously frustrating for me, I can't read what's been posted, because of the pop up ads. They stop me from reading the posts. I try going backthe the original page and the same thing happens, I get an ad, with no information, and can't back to the original posts. It happens all the time, and it's no fun. HELP

                      • Disable JavaScript for the time being. Then get either Ghostery or AdBlock. I use Ghostery and highly recommend it. Just block everything and you'll be ad free on this website with no problems. If you lose functionality on other websites, you can temporarily pause blocking and you're good to go.

                        • This continues to happen, particularly on my iphone - this iteration is a hijack to a 'free app' webpage and yes, I'm completely off the original site.

I'll no longer view this site via mobile because I just can't stand being hijacked by a website. This is the only entertainment website I visit where this problem presents.

It would be nice if someone from the site administration would post an update on what's being done to correct this issue.

                          • This should shed some light on the problem:

                            • Thanks for the article, but.......

I mean this respectfully, but this is not the best of answers. I'm supposed to just take it for granted that these purveyors of adverts are doing the 'best they can' to remove malicious javascripts yet they can't seem to find all of them? How can they be sure that this is all innocuous? More to the point, it's acceptable to this website that their own advertising directs users *off the site*?

I have a solution - installing adblock and not viewing this site from my phone - but my sincere hope is that the site administration discontinues the practice of purchasing bulk ads from groups that don't insure they are free from this type of malicious content. It can be done. I go to numerous entertainment websites that operate quite well without an adblocker.

                              • Any way to keep out spammers?

Isn't there a way to keep out spammers from registering? There are various ways of doing this so I won't list them all. The continual flood of spam is getting tiresome.
