Jack "Harrison just learned the language "

Seriously Jack, I know kids are quick learners but I doubt he has mastered the language yet and it won't hurt for him to be in the U.S.

I want to see Harrison give us a long dissertation in Italian. That would be very interesting since, apparently, he is quite the whiz. At this rate, he'll start school in the 3rd grade, graduate high school 2 yrs later, and then off to Harvard. All by the time he's 10.

HAHAHA! Is he in Italian immersion?

I grew up learning French every year just a little older than Harrison and I still know nothing. These writers...

Yeah, It didn't make sense to me what Jack was saying there about Harrison mastering the language and how being in the US might be an issue.

I don’t think he meant ‘mastered’ the language. If Harrison was in Kindergarten or with an Italian Nanny it is quite possible that he speaks at the level of a his peers. What I found more surprising was when Victor said Harrison was the perfect age to learn to play Chess. Mr Google agrees, who knew??

          I agree.

Kids are sponges. If Harrison spends his day with a nanny or daycare where Italian is the spoken word then he will pick up the language just like kids learn English.

After 6 months in a foreign country a small child can learn a language. I see it happening all the time around me with French. Harrison has the right age for this to be plausible and if he spends time with Italian speaking people it can definitely happen. And he can also forget all about it if he doesn't practice once he's back in GC.
What I have a problem with is the fact that Harrison would have no problem adjusting to life in Italy in general after going to live there with 2 perfect strangers.

If you learned French while in a foreign country, it's not the same. I started French at 11 and was very bad at it. I only got better when I went to live in France and I was shocked of how little I actually knew after more than 15 years of learning.

Yeah, I learned French from Grade 3 to Grade 9 in Canada.

It is the same language. Some colloquial differences if you're from Quebec but French is French.

It's stupid every time they bring up Harrison's time in Italy. ?. First he picked up a new language just like that. Of course this after he was perfectly fine with going to Italy in the first place and had no issue with not being around Tara his loving mother, but just accepted Kyle and Summer. ?

I am Italian, not Italian-American, but Italian, and Harrison could learn it if he's been gone a year. We don't speak much English in Italy like they do in Switzerland, for instance.

I learned English is about a year, and German the same, though I've forgotten some German now since I don't use it any more.

His loving mother that used him as a bargaining chip? Used her own son as a bargaining chip? Why wouldn't he accept Kyle and Summer when they've been good to him. It's not like they are treating him terribly. They are good parents to Harrison.

Everyone is not the same. My cousin was taught Spanish at a very young age and started speaking it fluently right away. Everyone that knows her was so impressed. Just because one child might not pick up something fast does not mean every other kid is like that. Everyone has different capabilities. Some kids excel in areas that other kids don't excel in.

My mother was the daughter of Polish immigrants who.spoke only Polish in the home. She quickly learned English when she went to school. Kids are sponges.

backseat writer, yes, it is the same language, but the accent is so different, sometimes it's hard to understand. I live in France, I hear French around me 24/7, when it's Canadian French I have to make an effort to understand because the accent is so ... American (for lack of a better word).

I have a lot of immigrant friends (we are immigrants ourselves). ALL the kids I know who were born outside of France but arrived here before the age of seven (or so), learned the language in a matter of months, by going to school. Some of them even have a harder time speaking their mother tongue (the one spoken by their parents at home) because small kids tend to "choose" to speak the language they hear outside of their family circle - this is explained by their need to adapt and to feel they belong to the new world they are confronted with.
I actually asked several professionals about this because I was afraid that my daughters won't know the language when they go to school (since at home we speak in our mother tongue at home). They both picked it up in a couple of months (they were 3 years old at the time).

Harrison is not extraordinary, he's just like any other small kid living in a foreign country.
