I was confused when Mariah and Tessa acted like they couldn’t really afford a nice honeymoon, but “someday”, as they put it. Had just planned a few days at a cabin somewhere and nearby it seemed, until Nick and Sharon mentioned the Paris gift. Tessa’s music career seems great and Mariah’s job at Jabot seems lucrative enough. Their place above CL can’t cost much especially with Sharon owning it. Just seemed weird of them to act like a honeymoon was out of the question. I guess it was a way for Sharon and Nick to be written to give them a wonderful wedding gift but still…

The "someday" wasn't a financial issue, it's because Mariah wanted to be there for Sharon right now. It had nothing to do with them being unable to afford it. She just didn't want to be away from Sharon for an extended period of time right now in case she needed her. -
The way it was written seemed to me to imply they couldn't afford it also. Staying at a cabin for a few days isn't any different than travelling to Paris or anywhere else for a few days. Of course it could be that Tessa isn't really making any money because she hasn't gone on tour yet to support her new album. That's where she would make most of her money.Comment

I think it was used as a way to have Nick and Sharon give them the dream honeymoon. I don't think writers were worried about people picking apart the "whys". It's like saying we didn't see anyone use the toilet during the wedding.Comment

I don't think Tessa is that famous. She is probably a non-entity outside of the Cheese Belt. Mariah is not a Newman and probably will never inherit anything from that family. Her parents were Sharon and her first BF. I read somewhere that there are a lot of bisexual women who choose to marry men instead of women for financial reasons.Comment

I think there is a misconception about other peoples money. Tessa is a recording artist with some level of fame, but performers most often get the smallest piece of the pie. There are exceptions, but you have to be superstars. Even then, they will say that they get the most money in touring, not in album sales. Tessa is always home, so she's not making as much money as one would think. Mariah is probably making a good salary, but is low on savings right now. Plus...they are trying to work towards planning for a child.
That storyline makes sense with Mariah and Tessa. It's one of the few couples that it would apply to on the show.Comment

I was coming here to say just this. Even famous musicians now have said that they have to tour to earn their money, because record sales don't bring in much anymore and streaming pays very little unless you get a massive number of streams.
Like you also said, Teriah want to start a family and adopting is expensive. Mariah did not grow up like her siblings did with a silver platter and a trust fund, and while Sharon would give her money (Nick too, for that matter), Mariah isn't the type to ask for a handout anymore. It is my impression that Teriah paid for their wedding, so I doubt a lavish trip to Paris would be in their budget. (I am sure Nick spared no expense.) I loved the gesture, and Teriah looked genuinely grateful.
