Why did Nick and Phyllis break up again?

mostly because the last month Phyllis kept saying "What's going on with us?" daily until Nick had it dawn on him there must be something going on with them lol as she formulates her transition to lurking lap dog Jack and her return to the Abbot mansion

They're freeing up Nick for Sharon or the Con. Sharon dosen't need him, she's a stand alone character. The Con not so much.

I know, right?
Every other day she was like "are we OK" and he was like "sure, let me deal with some family drama" and then Phyllis went "ah, your stupid family (eye roll)", and Nick went "you can't say that, only I can say that"... rince, repeat, insert Jack to comfort Phyllis and "help her" save her relationship with Nick.

Nick had nothing else going on and she had a hotel room, some booze and a video game system - there is no going back - how many times had they been through it before that didn't work in the last 25 years? They should both be mad at themselves yet happy they didn't get married again and have to go through another divorce - both of them mistook "friend with benefits" as "the love of my life"
