It's not a huge stretch. There is plenty of people who try to be good parents who are mentally or emotionally abusive. Sonny more towards women then his kids but there are tons of people who only thin abuse is physical.

I agree that Sonny would risk his life for his children. He went to Turkey to save Dante, he stood on a ledge to reach Morgan. I believe Sonny would sacrifice his life to save one of his children.

But when Sonny wants something that he knows or should know would hurt his kids, he can't bring himself to make that sacrifice.

--He knew that killing AJ, if he got caught, would devastate Michael, but he couldn't stop himself. And after he did get found out Sonny still said he would do it all over again. He didn't care that Michael was hurt, he just cared that Michael was blaming him.

--He knew or should have known that if Kristina was dating Johnny, as he believed, then there was a good chance that she would ride in Johnny's car. But Sonny let his hatred of Johnny overrule his concern for his daughter, and the result was he nearly killed Kristina with a bomb.

--He knew Morgan was heavily involved with Ava, but when he was feeling I don't even know what, he still decided to have sex with his son's girlfriend in the crypt where they'd just buried the biological father of one of his other sons (the father he killed).

--He also decided to blow the whistle on Morgan hiding the fact that Kiki wasn't a Q at the wedding. He could have stayed out of it, he could have gone to Morgan before and talked to him, he could have even sought out Kiki and told her the truth, but he decided to humiliate his son in public.

--He knew or should have known that getting Jax deported out of spite would hurt Josslyn, and he just did it anyway.

--He knows that Nina's actions hurt Avery and Donna, who are both very young, and he just doesn't care because he has these feelings for Nina that he wants to indulge.

abusive people are all about power and control and by not being a sonny apologist i can honestly say - sonny is all about the power and control. he has abused the women in his life including kristina his daughter. even nina has been seen shaking in her boots at sonny’s outbursts.
he screams to the top of his lungs at people, throws bar ware at people. he has threatened carly more times than i can remember and i thought he would rip brenda to shreds after learning she wore a wire.
and what about the females at his strip club that he provided drugs for - thats abusive.

he has calls women bitches and whores.

and this is who tptb have romanticized into becoming a leading man and viewers continue to excuse his behaviors as much as the writers .

yeah, i wish sonny would have an epiphany about how abusive he has been his entire adult life. i would love to see sonny have a 180° change in his life. i’ve wished it for a long long time. but , mo will likely retire before sonny ever changes his ways

I think it would be a great story for him to realize how much like Deik he actually is. You don’t have to put your hands on someone to be abusive and Sonny is very abusive. It would be even better if Carly recognizes she’s an abused wife and never goes back to him no matter how much he begs and lies about being a changed man.

Sonny is another in a long line of abusive men being glorified on soaps. It's not new or unique or any more egregious with him than with any of the many, many others. Even many of those who are remembered fondly through the haze of time had abusive incidents, attempted or completed sexual assaults. Some will write them off as a different era, when rape or abuse wasn't seen as seriously as it is now, but it doesn't undo what they did. Sonny, Luke, Alan Q, Julian Jerome...the list goes on and on.

Can't stand Sonny, but he's not being Deke. And Sonny's not emotionally abusing Michael. Michael is a grown man who is upset his Dad didn't take his side. My issues with Sonny is he's a murderer who has been cast in the role of some Anti-Hero who commits crime for the better good of ppl. And his family are more than supportive of that until it doesn't met THEIR agendas. Not saying he hasn't been abusive, in fact they're been a few GH characters that have and they aren't all men.

They’ve done that story before. When Kristina was abused by Kiefer, she went to therapy with Sonny and tried to get him to see that he is emotionally abusive to women but he yelled and screamed about how abuse is only physical in his eyes.
