Stories that soaps should not do

I was thinking about the upcoming "Alexis does prison" story and how awful I think it will be. It's one of the story lines that I really think that soap operas just should not attempt because they really do not have the resources to do them realistically. Prison and mob stories always bring out the budget constraints that soaps work within. They don't have the resources to write these stories effectively and the results are generally pitiful. As far as I know, Pentonville is the only coed prison anywhere.

Soaps opera's should stick to their area of expertise, family relations. They can do the hospital stories well as long as they stick with the part in the hallways and recovery rooms, the people part, not the technical drama in the operating room. The drama of a family member who is sick is something they don't need a ton of research to do right. The drama inside a prison or mobster negotiations is not something everyone is familiar with and requires expert research which is beyond their budget. When soaps try to wing it, the results are not good television.

Ever since Nelle and Shiloh and Ryan were all allowed to co-mingle at Pentonville, I have thought prison stories were a joke. I don't expect reality from a soap, but come on...male and female prisoners in the same place? Not gonna ever happen.

With Alexis going to prison and Jason already there, I think they are going to do something similar to the story they did with Julian, Ava, Sonny and maybe others all in prison at the same time.We will have three stories going on at once...Port Charles, Tan-O and Pentonville.

I don't know - I don't really expect reality on a soap, so prison, illness, hospital stuff doesn't bother me. I don't find it disrespectful because it's just not real or pretending to be. If it's interesting and brings some good drama, I'm on board with just about anything!

As a rule, prison story lines are of the "scared straight" genre so viewers learn a lesson. Julian's last incarceration is a good example of that aspect. The Club CoEd Fed show mentioned above is a) not real and b) totally far-fetched as far as soaps go.

Alexis should have pleaded insanity and gone to Shady Brook. She should have watched one of those women’s prison documentaries....she’s gonna be sorry. And ICAM I don’t want to see any more prison stories. Look at Jason...of course he had no choice but they don’t even give him a pot to piddle in.

I am bored to tears with the Tan-O story. I don’t expect a great prison story especially with one of the characters being Alexis. I just don’t enjoy this character regardless of her story.

There have been coed prisons in the U.S., though the idea doesn't seem to last very long. Here's one that was tried in the 1980s. Eleven months after it went coed seven of the 156 prisoners were pregnant:
