Why did Lulu say Wiley was her nephew??

Just started watching again after a long break, so maybe I'm missing something.

Lulu called Wiley her nephew. Isn't Wiley her cousin? Whether Michael or Lucas is the father, she is still Wiley's cousin. I guess he would be her nephew if she was married to Dante? But weren't they divorced before the truth came out? It was just confusing to me. ??

Dante is Michael's brother, so Wiley is her nephew through Dante. It shows that she still thinks of Dante as her family.

When they though Wiley/Jonah was dead, Lulu still considered him her nephew through Dante so I guess she still does (even though he’s also biologically her cousin).

Lulu would be considered Wiley's aunt by marriage if she were still married to Dante. Lulu is Carly's cousin.

Whether she was thinking about Dante or not, a lot of people refer to cousins of a different generation as aunt/uncle/nephew/niece.

They do?? They don't do that in my family. I have seen it done for very close family friends who are not related. We always called close family friends aunt or uncle. But as far as my actual family, the kids in my family refer to adult cousins as "Cousin Whoever" as a sign of respect. So I had never heard of that being done in actual families, but it would make sense! ?

My father cousin’s children’s children refer to me as aunt because my second cousins and I are very close. It is more about the age difference than explaining what a second cousin once removed is!

I think that it is common (not saying EVERYONE) to call an older relative "AUnt" or "Uncle" when it is actually some kind of cousin But I don't think the "aunt" would say my niece or nephew She would call them just by name and if needed say "she is my cousin or She's my cousin Jack's child"

Exactly! Cousins that are 20 years old are often referred to as aunt or uncle. It is a sign of respect

Since GH has indicated that Lulu has still maintained a relationship with Dante's family, it would make sense that she considers Wiley (Dante's brother's child) to be her nephew.

It's common here to hear the younger generation refer to the adults as Aunt Cousin Lulu or Uncle Cousin Dante to indicate the cousin is their parent's first cousin, not theirs.

Joss used Uncle Sonny, even before Carly and Sonny remarried and he became her stepfather. He was also Uncle Sonny to Michael before his adoption.

It's funny to think of Dante and Michael as not having any blood relation between them though. They are only like step-brothers-in-law. lol

Michael was adopted by Sonny so long ago that I sometimes forget about that, lol. I do like that the half siblings, non related siblings still treat each other as family. Joss with Kristina, Dante and Avery. Molly acted more of a sibling to Michael and Morgan than their cousin.

I could never if I had a million years even try to remember who is who and why real blood or not, cousins or not first second third etc. etc.
Sometimes it seems to get a little inbred.

Wiley is her nephew because Dante and Micheal are brothers. Michael is her brother-in-law therefore his son is her nephew.

But not by blood. Only by adopted, step, in-law.

Since Bobbi is Lulu's aunt, that makes her Carly's cousin, therefore more of a cousin to Michael (by blood) which would still make Lulu a 2nd or 3rd cousin to Wiley. Wiley is Lulu's former step-nephew-in-law, but is now just her 3rd cousin. LOL

The Corinthos siblings don't refer to Michael as their adopted brother especially since Michael was there first. Michael was two when Carson got married. I actually like that the family treats it that way. Within their blended family there are adopted, half, step and not even related siblings. I guess Lulu still considers Michael her brother in law.

            Okay, buckle up!

Lulu’s first cousins on the Spencer side are Carly, Lucas (via adoption), Valerie, and the late BJ (via adoption).

Lulu’s father is also with Tracy, Michael’s aunt. Making them essentially step-cousins in addition to first cousins.

And while the writers do not acknowledge it now, Carly was a huge mother figure for Lulu when she was first brought back on screen and up until she got involved with Dante. Carly was a surrogate mother for Lulu when Laura was catatonic.

Dante and Michael are brothers, as Sonny is their shared father (via adoption for Michael).

Dante’s mother is married to Ned, who is also Michael’s first cousin. Making Michael and Dante also cousins-in-laws.

In GH/PC time based on Rocco’s age, Lulu was married to Dante for about a decade.

Lulu’s son Rocco is Wiley’s first cousin via Dante and Wiley and Rocco are second cousins once removed through Lulu and Michael.

            Dante is Wiley’s uncle.

Dante is also Wiley’s cousin-in-law once removed.

Having Lulu refer to herself as Wiley’s aunt is either a recognition that Wiley is her child’s first cousin (as well as her first cousin once removed and her step first cousin once removed) and calling him her nephew is simpler than explaining that or a reflection that she still consider’s Dante’s family her family (even though with respect to Carly’s children with Sonny, Dante’s family is still also her family).

To all of the people stating that aunt/uncle is often used to refer to cousins and other people who who are significantly older and have some sort of connection to their family, this is very true. It's a sign of respect that you don't simply refer to the person by their first name. However, it is uncommon for the older person refer to the younger one as niece/nephew, they usually just call them by their name.
