I wasn't watching when Ric was introduced and during the panic room stuff, and I only saw Alcazar for a few months before he was killed, so I can't really comment on them. But I think normalizing Franco was incredibly bizarro -- and it's turned out to be a very polarizing move. Some viewers have come to love Franco, but others are disgusted every time they see him.

Stuart Damon would have probably retired by now regardless. He's 83 years old and has seemingly had some health issues. It's very unlikely that he would have remained a regular for all that much longer even if Alan wasn't killed off in 2007.

IIR, Stuart Damon worked his last year mostly in a wheelchair; 2013 was the last year he worked, period. I also vaguely recall an interview in some magazine where he said he couldn't work anymore and he did not want Alan to be in a wheelchair, so he declined to continue
