Can the Catholic church defrock Eric for performing exorcisms?

Is that something he's allowed to do on his own without approval from the higher ups in the church?

It's VERY complicated, depends on oppression and possession, who was baptized by whom and when. A usual exorcism must go through proper channels including a thorough mental health evaluation and various permissions in the church.

I’m actually glad he won’t leave the church by his choice

I’m more bewildered by how a priest can get married, get divorced and go back to being a priest!

I believe it is,"Once a priest, always a priest." Even if a priest walks away from the priesthood, marries, divorces, and then goes back supposedly he is always a priest. He has just fallen away. But by going to confession he can be absolved and return. But hey, I am not Catholic so if I am wrong please correct me!

Theoretically, I think you are right, but in real life, I think he would have to go through some kind of review from higher-ups in the church. There would be questions about his stability and commitment.

But a good confession brings forgiveness

There are priests specially trained to perform exorcisms. Some have a calling to this specialty.

And there are steps short of exorcism that may be taken
