Xander saving Maggie...first step towards redemption?
He's been taking small steps toward redemption for the last year (our time, 2 years with the jump). He's still the guy who tried to kill Nicole and Eric and later blackmailed her into a relationship. But, he seems to be edging closer to being a decent person.

well as someone who detests Eric for getting away with killing Daniel I can hardly hold that against him.
Fair enough. I still wince over the idea of Eric raising Daniel's daughter. But finding Eric somewhat objectionable does not change the fact that Xander attempted to murder her at least twice that I can think of and Eric never did anything to Xander.
I like Xander and am rooting for a redemption. To my mind, however, he has a long way to go. He's better and wants to be better. But he will need to start simply wanting to be a decent person for the sake of being decent, not to impress people who cares about (i.e. Maggie and Sarah). Also, he will need to stop being so tribal in his morality. He ease at the idea of allowing someone to be injured to protect those few for whom he cares is not actual decency, even if his motives are better than they were.
The baby switch happened about a year ago and I don't think Xander has done anything as awful in the past year so he may have already been on a narrow road to redemption. His biggest mistake has been trying to keep the secret for the past year.
Yep Xander doesn't need to be redeemed, EJ did some good things too but they never redeemed him don't understand the need to change Xander into a good guy keep him as a anti villain..
NO! Saving someone isn't redemption. It isn't even close to it but apparently that's how Ron thinks redemption works.
well I'm not saying saving someone's life is the final step in redemption. But surely it can be a first step. He just has to you know...keep taking steps.
I don't think he needs a redemption, gray characters like Xander, Gabi are the most interesting in soap operas. Xander just needs to be appreciated by two people because for him it's important (Maggie and Sarah)
Basically I saw this as of an opportunity of getting one inch closer to getting Sarah back. Maggie will set it straight to her when she open her eyes from whatever mess she is doing with Brady.
I don't know if the plan is to completely redeem Xander or leave him a little gray. In any case, the character has grown a lot if we compare him with his worst moments of the past.
His growth path started when he fell in love with Sarah, since then he has tried to do better.
Of course, the baby switch does not speak in his favor, but this time it wasn't about selfishness or revenge, but of love, even if a slightly deviated sense of love.
The problem is that Xander has received little love in his life;No one has ever taught him to love sincerely before Sarah; but he still has to learn a lot about love and I think he has to stop looking for his uncle's approval and instead look for his way.
