    My How Times Have Changed!

Just noticing how times have changed since Dallas had it's original run.

Between the Pledge of Allegiance being recited in an episode to JR calling men in the Middle East a name that would constitute "hate speech" today. To the fact that when Dallas aired back then we got over 49 minutes of show... Today, we get maybe 36 minutes of GH, not sure what it is for the average primetime drama.

How has the times changed for you?

The times are changing(almost) faster than I keep up with. I thought I'd seen&heard most everything under the sun on basic tv. Once I heard John Ross utter the word "bullsh#t" last season I knew how wrong I was.
I haven't been that shocked since I heard Jane Wyman's Angela Channing call Jacqueline Perrault a b&tch on Falcon Crest a hundred years ago.

For me one of the most striking changes is the use of cell phones. I remember how dramatic it was when JR was shot and Jock had no way of reaching Bobby and Pam because they were driving out of state, so he sent a chopper to find them and bring them back. Hearing "Ewing 4 Pull Over" from the chopper was amazing. Today it would be no big deal - just a simple call on the cell.

    That is so true July.

In an early episode JR had a cell phone that looked exactly like a phone they'd have sitting on the counter at Southfork.

I love love those old shows Victor. It puzzled me to no end when I was kid why the couples had seperate beds lol.
While I enjoy watching the classics(I Love Lucy,Dick Van Dyke,Dennis The Menace, etc)part of me gets a bit sad when I see them. I can't help but mourn/miss the peaceful innocence those shows presented.

yeah im 20 and the older shows is what I like, the stuff they have on tv now is unreal, atwt you will like this story ,once on as the world turns lisa was talking about a kissing scene she had and they made her redue it because they said it was to long,it should only be a peck on the check nothing longer.and on the flinstones they even had seperate beds.dick vandyke show i think buddy and sally should have been married.on dick vandyke show look at the one that played millie, later on the nanny she plays frans grandmother,i couldnt believe it when i found that out.

------------oh, I so know what you mean DrIvan!! How times seemed so much simpler only a few decades back. In so many ways there were, just look at the innocence of the beloved show, "Mayberry' . On these shows no one would have ever thought of locking their doors. "I Love Lucy" is still one of my favourite shows ever-it never fails to make me laugh-soooo much talent on thet wonderful show!! ..........This is a nice thread, midwest.

-------Hi July Baby Yes-computers were absolutely GIAGANTIC in the 80's!! I laugh when I think about the first ones, but I always think back to a delightful film starring Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn, called "Desk Set". (It's a holiday film, so is usually run on classic film networks this time of year) .....anyway, Katerine Hepburn's character (can't remeber her name just now), works in an office with a new, 'State of the Art' computer. (mind you this was in the '50's!) This computer literally coverd an entire wall of a huge room/office, where many workers had desks, and little pieces of paper would spit out answers to questions 'asked of it'..... It's a fun film if youlike that era and sort of flick .... I highly advise it to everyone!! Fun to talk about 'how times have changed', and wow-HAVE THEY EVER!! -----Thanks once again, for this fun thread, midwest.

----------love you mentioning these sweet and oh so innocent shows DrIvan. Just the other day I spoke to a friend back east, and he named his new dog, Eddie, after Eddie Haskell !!!! because he sees Eddie's personality in his new doggie!! I thought that was so cute! ....Those shows sure leave an impression, even to younger people, in their teens, or in their twenties, (that's young to me!! who are seeing all of these these shows for the first time on classic TV networks. They love them, and really find them amusing and lots of fun to watch. ..... Thanks for your fun memories and thoughts on these 50's show,s, on this thread my dear friend, DrIvan

LOL!! Oh Tulip I had the same reaction lol. When I heard John Ross say it I figured it was a fluke(one time only thing). I knew tptb had to pay a pretty penny to use that phrase so I figured I'd never hear it again on Dallas. When I heard Bobby say I thought "Did Bobby Ewing just say that???" Then, as I sat there sort of shocked&amused I'd heard the word again on Dallas I said to myself there's something else I can say I lived to see lol. I laughed&thought "What would mama(Miss Ellie)think if she heard her baby using that kind of language" Can you imagine the uproar back in the 80s or 90s if that had been said on basic tv lol?

Tulip they did seem so much simpler, happier,&more content didn't they? Watching world events&/or seeing how people treat/interact with one another in day to day life I often long for 'Mayberry'.
I Love Lucy is a timeless classic to me! I've seen each episode at least a few dozen times&I never fail to laugh out loud at Lucy,Ethel,Ricky,&Fred. I just saw my favorite two episodes of ILL a week or so ago. "Lucy Does A Commercial"&"Job Switching" never fail to have me laugh til my side hurts. If I live to be a 1000 I'll never get tired of hearing a drunk&happy Lucy try&say Vitameatavegamin.
    Have a great day Tulip!

Tulip, how adorable your friend named his dog Eddie. I love that!
Those shows certainly do make an impression. They've made a lasting one on me. I shouldn't be but I'm still surprised when I hear kids say how much they enjoy those classics. It's funny you mention young folks in their 20s being kids to you. I was out at the market a little while ago&I was talking to two kids in their 20s. When I got in the house a buddy rang me. As I was putting the groceries away I mentioned to him that I'd been talking to "some kids I met in the store". As soon as I said "the kids" I stopped for a few moments. My friend asked "What's wrong? Are you there" I laughed& said "Yes I'm still here but I was trying to figure out when did it happen?" He asked what I meant. I answered "When did folks in their 20s become 'kids'to me?" Lol.
Thanks so much for talking with me my dear Tulip!Have a wonderful weekend!

--------------Glad you like the tale of little Eddie, my friend's new dog, Victor And I bet your cat is lots of fun-and has lots ouf spunk! he(or she?) knows his own mind and what he wants!! .......... No, I had no idea that the actor who played Eddie Haskall had become a police officer, or the horrible news that he'd been shot. I so hope he recovered?! (I'll look him up on IMDB and/or Wiki) ....I sure hope he's okay! ...........Those old shows seem to have made such an impression on so many of us and still do-with a whole new audience, with every generation. I hope the actors that are still with us know how very much they've meant-and stil mean to so very many people!

It reminds me of when my parents or relatives said that when I was a kid-so when I hear myself say 'kids' referring to anyone past a teenager-I sometimes STUN myself!! LOL As you said, 'when did that happen'!! lol ........It's always a great pleasure talking with you too, my friend. Hope you are having a great weekend.

Oh my Tulip hearing my parents&their friends refer to me as a kid when I was in my early 20s drove me up a wall! Now hearing myself refer to the 20something set as kids stuns the heck out of me sometimes(you hit it on the head there my friend!). It's a real hard kick in the head sometimes lol.
I've had a wonderful weekend and hope you have too my dear friend!

LOL Tulip!! I can hear her too in that soft stern whisper of her's say "Bobby!" complete with BBG's beautiful southern drawl. I also can picture the expression on her face too.....surprised and tickled all in one.
You are so right about the language on television now not being allowed back in the 80s. Had tv in the 80s been anything relatively close to what it is now I'm sure my parents would've put every set in the house out for the garbage man to collect
I Love Lucy is one of the few shows that I never tire of. No matter how often I see the series I'll gladly sit through an episode any chance I get. "as I recite the dialogue along with the charactersl!!" You too??Lol I do the same thing! Thanks so much for the kind words. I feel the very same.Talking with you here on the boards is always a bright spot for me!

Hearing "Ewing 4 Pull Over" from the chopper was amazing. Today it would be no big deal - just a simple call on the cell.
class i remember! in the 80s no cell phones
i remember as well when Jr escaped haleyville he got to a payphone and rang Sly and got her to send a chopper out to him

so we have more cell phones now! and less choppers
