Very trivial question about Sue Ellen but I've wondered 4ever about this....

Why did she never call Jock 'Jock'?? I know she called him by his name to others but I can't recall one single solitary moment where she called him Jock to his face. Every scene I recall it was always something like "Good morning" or "Hello" but never "Good morning Jock" or "Jock may I speak to you" etc. I can recall the other DILs calling him Jock to his face but not Sue Ellen
If I've missed it(highly possible)someone point me to the episode(s)please.

You may be onto something Victorlord. Maybe it was her way of showing respect for Jock but I'll be danged if it doesn't bother the heck out of me. Each&every time I see the older episodes&see Jock&Sue Ellen pass each other(coming/going out of the patio door for instance)I want to yell "Call him Jock!!Please!!"
    Thanks Vic.

--------------Sue Ellen frequently called Miss Ellie, 'Miss Ellie'. (right? asking anyone!?) ....wow DrIvan, now you've got me interested too, as to why Sue Ellen did not call her father-in-law by name. As others have wisely suggested, it may be due to respect. But I never ever noticed either! Good catch!

Yes Tulip I seem to recall Sue Ellen calling Ellie "Miss Ellie" to her face on more than one occassion but never once did she call her FIL "Jock" lol.
I tell you this has baffled me for over 30 years lol.
P.S. I may tweet the question to Linda Gray&see if she'll give me an answer.

I never really noticed this till you brought it up. Maybe it was Sue Ellen's way of showing respect or maybe it was a way to show that she was intimidated by Jock and wasn't sure how to address him because of it.

GHKissoff for the life of me I don't know why I noticed it at all lol. Odd part about it is I didn't take note of it when I watched the series during it's first run in primetime(&I saw the show from it's premiere). One day, years later, out of the blue as I was watching reruns of the show on SN it hit I'd never heard her call Jock's name to his face.
Maybe as you&others say it was her way of showing respect. All I know is something this small&trivial shouldn't have jumped out at me let alone stayed somewhere in my mind all these years lol. Must be another Monk-ism I didn't know I had

I agree with you. I never noticed it either, but now that it's been brought up, I find it interesting. Jock was a larger-than-life figure, IMO, and Sue Ellen, having been brought up as the perfect southern belle, with proper manners and respect, probably wouldn't dare say anything to the family patriarch that could be seen as disrespectful. I remember how he excoriated her in front of the whole family at the hospital for not being there when JR was brought in after being shot. Sue Ellen just stood there and didn't even try to defend herself. If it were anyone other than Jock, I think she would have tried to speak up. I think she did find him intimidating, as you said.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^It is weird isn't it lol.
Now based on the responses from you all I'm safe in assuming I didn't miss/overlook Sue Ellen uttering a "Jock" to her father in law?
Whew!!It's a relief knowing I didn't make this up. Thanks to you all!
