If BBG were alive today she'd be 90 yrs old!
Barbara Bel Geddes was one talented actress, she is missed!
She was talented and beautiful. I remember watching her in really old movies when she was a young woman on Turner Classic Movie channel; and in one of my faves when she was a young giirl entitled, "I Remember Mama."
I had forgotten about Barbara's role in "Vertigo." Every single time I hear her name, I always think of her role as Ms. Ellie on Dallas. Yes, Barbara owned this role. Until recently, I had no idea once she retired, Barbara wrote two children's books and created a line of greeting cards.
I had forgotten about Vertigo. But Ms. Ellie was her signature and no one else really fit the role after her. Donna Reed (another one of my faves) came in after BBG had to leave due to what was reported as health problems, but returned to the role temporarily when Donna Reed was summarily fired! It is believed Donna Reed was given a bad rap simply because fans refused to accept her in the role. My memory is fuzzy, but didn't another veteran actress named Cyd Charisse play Ms. Ellie, also?
Wow! This is bringing up so many memories! It is amazing how Dallas not only became a stellar primetime soap, but such a staple in American culture, history, and people's memories!!
It was driving me crazy, so I searched the Web and found what was stuck in my memory. The actress was Alexis Smith (playing Lady Jessica Monfort, Clayton Farlow's sister) and she came onboard during the s/l of Ms. Ellie marrying Clayton Farlow. I knew she was on the show, but I really had my memories mixed up (that she played Ms. Ellie), LOL!!
Happy 90th bbg - you are not forgotten!
No worries, I completely understand! Over the years, I find myself thinking about past episodes of soaps/prime time television shows I have watched and trying to remember whether or not the facts I remember were correct. When I was reading the previous posts from this thread about Barbara Bel Geddes' film roles, I had forgotten about her Academy Award nominated performance in "I Remember Mama" from 1948.
