jock was a really good actor, the only thing that got to me was somtimes he would sorta play the boys agaisnt one another.I loved it when jr got shot and suellen finally showed up and she says excuse me I was sick, jock says sick or drunk.
discuss...
now for me Jock was played brilliantly by the late Jim Davis! he was the perfect Father figure in the show and will always be remembered!
that famous conversation with Bobby about Power was just awesome
its a shame that they had to write off Jock as Jim Davis passed away, but even after the character Jock died in the show, his legend lived on through Ellie, JR and Bobby
and ultimately the name Ewing Oil!
its always been about 2 things Family and Ewing Oil
just some put Oil before family![]()

true he would play them against eachother and then try and break up the fight between them both
usually stopping Bobby from killing JR haha
and yes as for the comment about being sick/drunk - that happened later in Dallas as well
when Pam said her dad digger was really sick in hospital - Jr typically says...Sick you mean Drunk! haha
but also now to discuss the character of Jock Ewing in Dallas the early years played by Dale Midkiff - i thought he played a brilliant Jock Ewing
dale made a great jock,I really liked all of them and I got to know more about the begining of the story, actually felt sorry for jock, all those years of digger saying he stoled from him and he didnt.
Jock was actually one of my favorite characters! I need to re-watch the early seasons to see if I would still feel that way after all these years. Jim Davis was such a strong, commanding screen presence as Jock Ewing that you actually got the feeling that JR became a little (very little) intimidated when he was in Jock's presence.
I never really appreciated Jock until recently, when I took the time to watch the entire series. His presence was felt to strongly from episode one til the last episode. JR and Bobby were always talking to Jock's portrait, Ellie talked about him as a father, Punk and Jordan were reminders of his early years. Even in the second to last season Ellie and Clayton went on the adventure to Pride, Texas all because of Jock.
Jim Davis was the only person I could see playing Jock and I cried when he cried, yelled at him when he was mean to Ellie and laughed when he put JR in his place.
Had TPTB forgotten about Jock or just made him a far away memory the impact as to why JR was the way he was as well as the dynamic between Bob and JR would've never been the same.
Love me some Jock Ewing.
Great post, midwest and I totally agree with you. The writers did a fantastic job keeping Jock's memory alive and making his presence felt even long after he passed away. I agree that Jim Davis was the only one I could see playing Jock and I think their decision not to re-cast the role was brilliant. Jock's death, and the subsequent struggle between JR and Bobby for control of Ewing Oil, brought about by Jock's will, led to some of the best s/ls on the show. And of course there was the whole Ellie/Clayton/JR dynamic, which never would have happened if they had recast Jock.
absolutely agree with you both on that - Jock is a Legend and his named lived on..and still does even in the present series through JR! and that greed for Oil and to get the name Ewing Oil back!
family and legacy has been very important to the Ewings even in the new series - it still matters to Bobby at least
his mama's ranch! that had been in the family for over 150 years!!
and also the part where Christopher rides to the tree on his horse and see's his name with Elena enscibed, same as Bobby and Anne
but no no Clayton and Ellie...it was JOCK & Ellie![]()
Clayton was a nice man - but Jock Ewing was the Don![]()
clayton was awonderful man,and he was great with miss ellie, but I always missed jock with her,I would have liked to see suellen with clayton
Jim Davis was absolutely perfect for the part. I can't even imagine anyone else playing Jock and I was glad when they didn't recast the role after he passed away. I think they made the right decision. Besides, the s/l's they created as a result of Jock's death were fantastic and obviously would have been impossible if they had recast the part.

I'm still curious about John Ross's comment in the new "Dallas" about Jock. He said Jock had set the two brothers, Bobby and JR, against each other, and that was the reason for all the family rivalry and fighting through the years. I'm interested in what everyone thinks about that statement. Do you guys agree with it?
IIRC, it was after John Ross was released from the hospital. He was grateful for what Christopher and Bobby had done for him and realized family was more important than arguing over power and money and ownership of SF. He and Christopher had made peace with each other (at least temporarily). The scene was at SF (I think they were in the kitchen); John Ross, Elena and Chris were talking about how things had gotten so out of control and how the rivalry had started in the first place. That's when John Ross made the comment about Jock.
well john ross was right, at times jock would play jr and bobby agaist each other and look at the will he had those to fighting to the end.and when they say jock spolied bobby ,I dont see that he always had jrs back.

The way JR taught his sons was how they showed the way Jock taught JR. Jock believed in tough love, even undercutting his own family, so they'd learn how to protect the family against outside threats. When James turned up, JR conned him once, then said to the camera that it was a tough lessson, but that he "wouldn't have it any other way." The final scene this season, where JRJ finally threatens JR with "putting him back in that home for good," and JR smiling as he syas "now that's my son...from tip to tail" continued this tradition.
It also surfaced when Sue Ellen showed JR the film of her on a talk show taking credit for Mandy Winger's career as a lingerie model (which caused JR to dump her), and JR just laughed, saying "That was brilliant, Sue Ellen."
What makes JR (Jock's legacy) so fascinating is that he has a code of ethics, though a much looser one than Jock.
That was when you had a character like Jock who fitted the role of Patriarch very well. He was missed when Jim Davis died. I loved that scene with Bobby about power. They did have Jock Ewing type characters on the soaps like Adam Chandler on AMC, Asa Buchanan on OLTL, Edward Quartermaine on GH, and Victor Newman on YR.
