Marlena: Supportive or Selfish?

To say Sami had a rough time last week is an understatement of epic proportions. Luckily, she had several loved ones who rallied around her with supportive shoulders to cry on. Rafe, Roman, Bo, and Hope were front and center. Caroline babysat the kids (surprise, I know). Brady and her friends like Madison, Jennifer, Abe, and Lexie were there, too. Gabi showed up to be with the family. Chad and Sonny tried to help by putting up flyers. Hell, even Kate offered Sami a muffin and some tea.
But Marlena’s support or lack thereof, perhaps, made me raise a quizzical John-Black eyebrow. It made me wonder, did she do enough to support her daughter? I struggled with that question all week while watching DAYS.
Now, this may not score me any points with diehard Marlena fans, but I can totally see Sami’s frustrations with her mother. Marlena is a devoted wife, but, unless we’re talking about Belle, I haven’t always seen her as a devoted mother. She has always been John-focused to the extreme. Heck, Marlena didn’t even go to Sami herself at first. She used Carrie as a go-between and only showed up when John could be with her.
I can see where that would be hurtful to Sami, especially when she needed the focus to be on her. She needed her mother. And Marlena, a mother who’s had children kidnapped, could have supported her on an even deeper level because of that.
That doesn’t diminish what John was going through, but Sami’s needs were more pressing at the moment. John had Carrie, his lawyer, trying to help him. Also, John was under lock and key and safe in the townhouse. Marlena could have left him with Carrie and Austin to support Sami. But she didn’t.
Granted, Sami said she didn’t want Marlena around and lashed out at her. I get that. But Johnny’s disappearance should have glued Marlena, a self-proclaimed lover of all, to her daughter’s side, but it didn’t. Even if Sami was pushing her away that should have given Marlena that much more of an incentive to hold on tighter. Instead, she listened to hear emotionally distraught daughter when she said to leave. I’ve witnessed Marlena not backing down to Stefano, so why didn’t she do the same for Sami?
Don’t get me wrong, I can also sympathize with Marlena. I understand that having the love of her life possibly being sent to prison is heartbreaking, but Sami’s heart was broken, too. Sami believed that her son could be dead. For Marlena that should have been reason enough to stick around despite not having the welcome wagon rolled out for her.
Ultimately, I don’t think Marlena is a monster, but I do think she should have fought harder to ensure Sami was getting the kind of support only a mother can give. Ah, well, Sami might fare better in the future if she changes her name to Belle or Carrie. I kid, I kid!
