S1-1980: Gary attends his first A.A. meeting with Val. Not really a cliffhanger, since the series was pretty much episodic at this early stage.
S2-1981: Sid is involved in a car accident after his brake lines have been sabotaged.
S3-1982: Val leaves Gary (and Knots Landing) after catching him in bed with Abby.
S4-1983: Gary remains in prison for Ciji's murder, while Karen learns that Diana ran off with the real killer...Chip!
S5-1984: Karen is shot by an organized crime syndicate gunning for Gary, who rescues Val from an alleged bomb threat but witnesses Abby being kidnapped!
S6-1985: Val and Co. converge on Harry & Sheila Fisher's doorstep, where she learns that her twins are still alive!
S7-1986: Karen is kidnapped by a mysterious figure; Paige arrives in Knots Landing claiming that she's Mack's long-lost daughter!
S8-1987: Abby buries Peter Hollister's body at Lotus Point after Olivia allegedly murders him, but a crack in the foundation causes her coverup scheme to unravel!
S9-1988: A crazed Jill forces Val to overdose on a bottle of sleeping pills in a murder-suicide stunt, while Mexican Federales kidnap Michael and Paige as per Manny's orders when Mack & Karen halt his drug-smuggling operation at Lotus Point.
S10-1989: Caught up in a rainstorm, Paige is torn between Greg & Ted, one of whom murdered Rick Hawkins.
S11-1990: Karen's stalker is revealed; Tom leaves Paige at the altar; Gary & Val plan to remarry.
S12-1991: Anne is left homeless after her latest scheme goes awry; Paige is arrested by Tom(!) for Brian's murder; Karen watches in horror as stepson Jason is involved in a potentially fatal car crash.
S13-1992: A presumed dead Pierce surprises Paige in her car; Meg is kidnapped; Anne fears that she may be pregnant for Greg!
S14-1993: In the series finale, Val returns from the grave and Abby returns to Knots Landing as the real mastermind behind a series of crimes plaguing the characters.

My favorites by far: Karen is shot/Abby is kidnapped (1984), Val finds the twins (1985), Abby buries Peter (1987), and Chip is revealed as Ciji's killer (1983).

Jill forcing Val to swallow those pills was one of the scariest episodes I've ever seen. Runner-up was Sid's accident. I never thought in a million years he would die.

Val finding her twins was when I joined the series, so it gets my vote! Looking forward to filling in the blanks with the DVDs!:D

Best was 1988 with Jill and Val; next was 1987 with the crack in the cement after Abby buried Peter; 1984 was awesome when Karen was shot.
And though not season ending cliffhangers, three other episodes stand out for their cliffhanger endings: when Chip fell onto the pitchfork at the culmination Ciji's murder mystery; when Lillimae ran over Chip with her car outside the courthouse; when Joshua fell off the roof after Lillimae and Kathy confronted him.

If you think about it, the KNOTS writers always killed off their villainous younger leading males (Chip, Josh, Peter, etc.) in spectacular exits!

Season 9 cliffhanger with Jill forcing Val to down those pills gets my vote. Jill was very scary in that episode. I'd love to see that again but I don't think that season will be out on DVD in awhile.
