Good news, Another World fans...
soapcentral.com has broken the news that Procter & Gamble will be launching a new "Classic Soaps" channel that will allow soap fans to watch episodes of some of their most beloved, classic soaps. One of the soaps will be Another World.
In conjunction with this, I am personally finishing up overseeing some of the technical things needed to re-launch the Another World section of the main soapcentral.com web site.

OHMYGOSH! Be still my heart! This would be a dream come true for me! I want so much to be able to see AW again!
It's supposed to start this week? Dan, please get back to us when you find out more - mainly when the shows are going to start! I went to the web site, but didn't see anything yet.
I can hardly wait! Do you have any idea if they're going to be showing the same shows as those on SoapNet or if they're going to start with another year?
OHMYGOSH! I can hardly believe it!

It's up!! They published 8 or 9 full episodes today!!! I hope they don't do that every day or I'll get REALLY behind! LOL! What a good problem! :D
http://videobeta.aol.com/video-category/another-world/1915
As close as I can tell, they're starting in 1978. They're talking about Blaine and I think she's still in Wyoming or Montana or wherever she's from. :)

Perhaps they will post a week at a time. They may only want you to watch one episode a day! lol.
I refuse to watch until they get to the shows with the spiffy Crystal Gayle opening ;-)

LOL! Dan!
I'll have to check to see when that happens! :D
I'm watching the first episode right now. Apparently it's August 1 or 2, 1980 because Russ Matthews just married Tracy DeWitt. It's their wedding night and he's undressing her now. :*
PS:
This is the perfect time to start. Cass comes on board July 21, 1982! I hated that they started the SoapNet reruns so late because they missed some of Cass' best SL's - Cecile, Felicia, Wallingford! I'm so excited to be able to see all that again!
Aaah! Life is good! :)

I still don't understand why SoapNet started so late in the series. Maybe they didn't have rights to anything earlier? I would have LOVED to see the real old days that I remember watching with my Mother when I was a kid.

Soapnet was supposed to have started AW where they did because there was a problem with the quality of some of the older shows and music rights.
mahdi
08-19-2006, 12:22 PM
lindaj, I heard that too, but the quality of the AW videos has been a pleasant surprise for me! It takes awhile to upload the High Quality versions of the videos, but WOW!
I don't have a high definition TV and have been wanting one. And of course, these old shows were not broadcast in HD. But viewing them on the computer monitor allows them to be HD and it is amazing!! Of course, I do get distracted by thinking "so-and-so has a scar," "such-and-such has a bruise," or "is that a pimple?" LOL! :D

I am so frustrated! They publised 9 episodes on 8-16-06. If fans watched one episode a day just on Monday through Friday like a current soap, they would have seen the last available show Monday, the 28th.
SO, when are they going to give us more episodes???? %(
No one should know better than P&G that soap fans get frustrated and lose interest if they don't get to see their shows. I've forgotten what was going on in the last episode because it's been so long. :(
delly
09-03-2006, 12:20 AM
I know the frustration. I"ve been waiting for more eps too. i hope they don't view this as a failed experiment. It doesn't seem like there's much ad interest at least it seems to always be the same ads. I've watched a couple of them more than once b/c Im not familiar with the show at this point (I was only a year old when they aired). I've gotten into it more than I thought I would. I have to admit that I love Blaine and seeing Cecil in her earlier days is wonderful. So far the only 'old favorites' of mine I've been able to see are Ada, Rachel and Mac. If they don't start releasing other eps then they will never catch up with Cass and the Loves.

Yeah...what gives?? The same episodes have been there since 8/16. I did watch a few clips, but it really didn't grab me. I didn't start watching until the mid-80s. Looking forward to seeing Ellen Wheeler as Marley/Vicky. At this rate, I may be waiting a long time!

My sister emailed me and then, called me all excited about this. We grew up in a very small town where everyone and their mother, grandmother, sisters - I think even some of the pets were hooked too LOL watched this soap. You knew better to even think about calling anyone you knew between 3 pm and 4 pm weekdays when it was on our local station and I remember my Dear grandmother saying, "I have to be back by 3 pm for my story" when she was making plans to go shopping or somewhere with other people. It wasn't a request, it was a fact. My sister has been watching the episodes and just enjoying every second of it. I would love to see the epiodes where Rachel is kidnapped by that evil Sfin (spx) and they send a tape recording to Mac etc. I loved those episodes. Plus anything with Jake, Marley, Vicky and later on, Frankie and Cass would be great to watch again. I wish they would have never cancelled that soap - I still miss it. It was nice though to hear how excited my sister was about this - thank you to those responsible for giving her that. She still lives in the small town but I have moved to a city about an hour away and I have promised her we will get together and watch some of the shows together soon.

They've finally posted 3 more eps on AW. The episodes are #4104, #4111 and #4122 so there are gaps in between probably because the network doesn't have copies of all of the old episodes.

Thank you for telling us, Delly!! I had become so frustrated I quit checking! :)
It's been so long since I watched the first episodes, I'm going to have to review them to see what was going on, but I can't wait to see the new ones. I have to wonder if it'll be months before they offer more. I hope not. I hope the delay was because some episodes were missing/poor quality and they're going to be offering them regularly now. I'm trying to be optimistic here because I really want to see these reruns. :-7
The Soap Net reruns started so late, some of Cass's best material was already past, so I was looking forward to seeing the older stuff. Now I'm crossing my fingers that will happen.
delly
11-10-2006, 02:55 AM
They've posted way more episodes now. It seems that whatever kinks there were are now out of the way. I'm off to see if I can figure out why I like Blaine even though she acts like an idiot.
mahdi
11-11-2006, 10:09 PM
I'm thrilled! Now I have 24 more episodes to watch and I'm optimistic that there will be more by the time I'm finished with those. Maybe I'm crazy - OK crazier than usual - but it seemed to me that episodes 4091 and 4092 were reversed. IOW, that 4092 was the day before 4091. On well! :-\
I know what you mean about Blaine. Even back then it was obvious to me that Blaine wasn't really a bad person, she just made the worst possible decisions and choices.
i loved another world and i am still piss they canceled it to bring Passions.
Thank you, I think the same and I can not believe NBC has kept Passions on this long. What a turkey. I quit watching Days cause I am still so mad about AW. Bring back AW, the best soap that was on TV, and kill that Turkey show (Passsions) and serve it up for Thanksgiving. Than it truly will be a Happy Thanksgiving for all.:D :D :D
Lets hope they get to the Vicky/Marley storyline (1990-91) with Anne Heche when Marley was on trail for "Who Shot Jake". She skipped town and Vicky pretended to be Marley while still slipping Vicky personality into her work." What a believable performance, this was just a preview of what was to come from this talented actor. Thank you Anne for all your fine work on that show.
I wish you continued success, your work speaks for itself. Cool Job your doing on Men in Trees.B-)
delly
11-30-2006, 11:21 AM
I agree about Anne Heche. I've been rewatching the Jake's shooting episodes recently. It's remarkable how much screen time Heche has she must have been working non stop. THey were crazy to let her go. It's so clear which twin she's playing at any given moment. And she actually made Marly interesting which IMO is no easy task.

Here Retromama, Mahdi already gave the link on page 1in this post (http://boards.soapcentral.com/showpost.php?p=2812862&postcount=7). If you select the regular quality you can probably view it right away. If you download the HD version it takes awhile depending on the computer/connection you have but the HD version is insanely good quality. And they update this so infrequently that you may as well take your time watching them.

OMG....OMG...
First of all, I did not even realize there was an AW board here. Had I but only known!!#-o
I have loved AW forever! Am so totally psyched that they brought it back this way. I know you soapnet users have been watching the old eppys for awhile but that's not available here.
AMC with Tad and Dixie has always my favorite couple, but with them killing Dixie off...well, back to my second fav couple of all time...Cass and Frankie. Looks like it will be awhile to get to them, but oh just imagine all the fun in between! Cass and Kathleen...Cass and Cecile (my grandma had all kinds of nasty Ukrainian curses for her!! ahahahah) Oh thank you P&G.
Remember the days when the sponsor actually cared about the shows they were sponsoring? I sure wish they would get back into the production side. Leaving important matters like our daily soaps to the networks...jeesh, see what that has lead to? Hope to have all kinds of fun discussion with you guys but please...mark the spoilers!!! ;)

I was able to watch the first episode without any problem straight from the site, but wasn't able to get the next one. Tried several of the episodes and the commercials ran but nothing after that.
I'm downloading one episode now. I've got hi-speed internet, but the timer still says it's going to take about 30 minutes to complete. Not a big deal to me anyway. I'm the one that ditched the last 20 minutes of my college anthropology class when Kathleen showed up alive and mucked things up for Cass and Frankie. (I told the prof to expect me to fail the final...told him as i turned in my paper "when you mark this..and you will..be kind. He gave me a C and i got the credits! :] )
You also have to download an AOL player...I'm hoping that doesn't turn out to be the biggest mistake of my life.
ooooo I am sooo excited!

There is apparently one more episode posted now but I can't view it. I can't view most of the eps now. They play the ads in a loop never getting to the show, like schlumbag said. I couldn't download the HD ones either and the one I had downloaded weeks ago won't work anymore.
I'm hoping P&G isn't abandoning this venture. I want to see the fallout from Mitch's shooting. It's a story from before my time but that I've heard a lot of references to. Ultimately I'm really enjoying watching the show transform into the one I remember from the earliest years of my life.

But now everything is working perfectly! I just watched Episode 4123 (the one that was looping) and I have 14 more to view! Happy days are here again!
I hope they'll add new eppies regularly now. I'm going to try my best to space watching the new shows out so that maybe new ones will be available before I'm finished with these. I don't want to have to go through withdrawal again. :D

You are very welcome Mahdi. I'm always happy to spread the word about AW.
I wouldn't count on them posting eps more regularly. I think this distribution schedule is roughly what they are aiming for. The dates on the site for when the videos were posted are wrong. Maybe that's the dates of when they first started putting them up but the videos they claim went up in October weren't up until early/mid November. There was about a 2 1/2 month break between the first and second lumps and then about a 3 month break before this most recent release.
ETA: They have increased the number of ads per show, splitting it up into chapters with commercial breaks. Maybe this will make it more worthwhile for them to release episodes more frequently.

You know, I really don't mind those commercials...but then I never have. For me it just makes watching AW online like watching on TV and I have that break to grab a fresh coffee! :)
But I do wish they would put episodes up more quickly. Why not put a new one up everyday? Jeesh, that would be actual soap shangrila for me!

I'm in Canada too and I would take the online P&G episodes over something like soapnet any day. I like that I can watch it anytime and don't have to worry about DVRs or anything. I'll often watch AW on the computer during Y&R commercials. And a specialty cable channel often involves buying a package of stations and even on its own it is an expense I can do without. But I know a lot of people prefer to watch shows on television rather than on a computer.
I'm so happy that they've been adding episodes so frequently. I think they will air the later episodes though at the current pace it won't be for quite some time. It would be nice to re-watch my favorite years of the show but I do love seeing the years I missed.

I was wondering if anyone has been able to view these episodes of AW using dial-up. I tried early on but it didn't work too well. You could hear what was being said, but the video was just still pictures. The audio would break up a lot too, so sometimes you couldn't really get a lot out of it. I don't think i ever got through one whole episode before it quit either. I finally just gave up trying to watch. If anyone knows what to do about this please tell me. It's probably just my connection, but if there is something you can do let me know.

Back in the early 80's there was an episode I watched. I was young then, and I have never forgotten about it. I don't remember all the details, and I wanted more information or perhaps to see a clip ofthis episode. I will tell you what I remember ( i had nightmares as a child of this, I still remember them).
It involved someone- perhaps Cecile, or Donna? wearing a balck cat suit, or leotard, and they were tampering, or maybe stealing baby bottles from someone's house. Please let me know if anyone remembers this!!! :-?

Really? Cool! I wonder if the P&G channel will be part of the more basic digital cable channels...I hope so.

%(Maybe you could help me figure out why I am not able to see the entire episode. After I download it, once they get to the first 'commercial' it won't continue to play. It either replays the same 5-7 minutes or I get nothing. It is rare to be able to watch the whole thing. AOL doesn't offer technical support.

I hope the problem has stopped for you but if you are still having the problem, try to make sure that you are always logged in when viewing. I always log in and have never had that problem.
Good luck viewing.

I've tried to watch the AOL videos but for the life of me, can't get them to work. Are they not compatible with MACs? I have an iBook and even when I download the Windows Media player for OSX, nothing works.
Also, do you know what date range the episodes are? Should I actually get the thing to work (!), I'd love to check out some stuff from '86.
Thanks in advance . . .

I wish I could help you DJisHOT, but I'm having trouble watching them now too. I have a PC and I've never had any problem watching them until now. I don't know what the deal is.
The episodes published online start sometime in 1980, so it'll be a good while before we get to 1986. I'm looking forward to Cass coming to Bay City - I just hope they keep publishing the shows. These tapes are not going to be too popular if people can't get them to work! #-o

The videos are watchable for me again!
Does anyone know how long AW did the "Today on Another World" segment at the beginning of the show? I hate it and mute it or skip by it. I hope they gave up on it quickly.
Edit: Now I can only watch the first segment in a loop. I do not like the new player.

I didn't enjoy AW on SOAPnet, so I haven't watched it on AOL, but I do love Texas! My love for Iris Wheeler has me hoping PGP eventually add GL to the channel, around the time Beverlee McKinsey arrives. It's such a shame they couldn't have began AW's episodes when Iris was still on. My guess is that they began in 1980 only because of Texas.
I have a question AW fans...is the show very different in 1980, from the SOAPnet episodes? I was thinking of giving it a shot since I love Texas and SFT so much.

tymps,
Yes the show was very different in 1980. I suggest you just watch the first few episodes and see what you think!!

Hi,
I just found this message board tonight. I've been having the same problem with the videos, but I've discovered that if you hit the forward button 3 or 4 times after the advertisements that you can view the whole episode without any interruptions.

Quite different and yet so watchable, I loved them, they start in 1980 and the first show is when Texas and its characters were on AW then it splinters off into its own show.
I loved both shows and watched til they both went off the air. I was a HUGE Iris fan as played by Beverly M. Hers was the original and best Iris on AW. She was such a woman/child on AW always so upset Daddy loved Rachel. :)
She was great and was one of the main reasons I kept going back in the beginning. I always loved it when she found a man strong enough to stand up to her, I remember when she and Brian Bancroft were together, he never took her guff.............ahhh memories.

I am psyched to watch AW again, but I loved Texas even more back then, sadly, my computer suddenly doesn't wanna let me watch them! I haven't seen Texas since it left the airwaves in 1982, what a trip that would be!

I was happily watching episodes and now all of a sudden, they don't want to work :[ I have a laptop and have never had a problem, I'm sure it must be @ the AOL end of things but don't know how to let them know or do they know and just aren't doing anything about it right now hmmmm :(

Lovin,
I wish I could help you, but I've had the same problem. I had to skip episodes 4179 - 4237 because they would not play for me. I had watched all the episodes up to 4179. And now I've watched 4237 through 4250 with no significant problems. I missed a bunch of good stuff though. :(
Do make sure you have the lastest video player update. Sometimes that's the problem, but you don't get a message saying that you need an update.

There are about 40 eps that I cannot view but happily the latest eps are viewable at least for me. The last 3 episodes posted, 4279 and beyond are viewable for me but the bunch before that I still can't watch. So hopefully the videos will be okay for everyone from now on. It kind of sucks missing out on a month or two of episodes but I can live with it. I never expected to see these episodes anyway.
ETA: Videos are not viewable to me anymore :(
I was able to watch a couple but now I once again only get to see the "loading..." and of course the commercials.
Does anyone know if there is anyone I can contact at AOL or P&G about this?
I've tried the AOL feedback button and the P&G classic soaps blog and the comments section of the videos but there doesn't seem to be any way of contacting whoever is actually in charge of these videos.
ETA: Chuck197007 has a solution. Google that name if you are interested in functioning links to the episodes.

Well, for a brief time I was able to watch the shows, but when I tried today watch today all I was able to watch were the ads. The show itself just kept loading. %(

A little late with my reply. I only check into this forum every once in a while. Sorry for having been unclear. If you google "Chuck197007" you'll find the solution. There's some discussion of it in the top ten characters thread on page 2, as off topic as that is. Chuck's links worked great for me but others had difficulty. I hope they work for you.

I've had major issues with the tapes, and ended up skipping some of them. A couple of weeks ago, I couldn't get any of them to play, but they're working fine for me now. Knock wood! :D
I've noticed they haven't published any new episodes in about three weeks. I hope that means they were busy fixing the tapes they'd already published and they're going to start publishing new ones soon and they're going to play properly. :-7

Just wondering if anybody out there knows how far back the Another World episodes go that have been posted on the internet. The only site I saw that has episodes is AOL video. Does anybody else know if there are early episodes (from the beginning through the mid-80s? I would be really intested in watching those again.
Same thing with Days of Our Lives. Does anybody know if there are the really early episodes available anywhere?
Thanks!

Just an update for anyone who's trouble viewing the episodes:
I couldn't get them to work for weeks - again - and I had pretty much given up. Then I tried again last weekend and found they had updated and reformatted the site. Apparently they did something to the videos too, because they play now. The "full screen" function doesn't work for me, but the videos load quickly and play normally now.
I'm relieved and delighted to be able to watch the 80's again. But also because I was afraid the AW videos were going to be canceled for lack of interest when, in fact, the problem was that they just wouldn't play and people got frustrated trying to view them.
So if you had given up on these videos, I suggest you try again. I think they'll work now. :)
